Lena Dunham’s Sobriety Milestone
Celebrities…they’re just like us.
While their bank accounts and media coverage may indicate otherwise, celebrities are human and can be dealing with significant obstacles in their lives—including addiction. When we hear that a celebrity has overcome substance abuse, it can provide motivation and hope for those struggling with addiction that sobriety is possible. Recently, Girls creator Lena Dunham took to social media to celebrate one year sober.
A Milestone Worth Celebrating
In a recent Instagram post, Dunham with followers her sobriety milestone and wrote the following:
“Today I’m in the miraculous position of being one year sober. I’ve done a lot of cool things in this life, but none has brought me the peace, joy and lasting connections that being part of a sober fellowship has (not even all girls camp. Sorry, Bunk Kingfisher.)
“…life is full of problems, but the cool thing about this one is that there is a solution: in every city, in many countries, you can find a group of people who are working hard to live sober, accountable lives and want to support you on your quest to do the same.”
In the post, she also said that no one is too “broken” to receive help, and there are people “in plain sight” who are willing to provide support and love.
Struggles with Klonopin
Dunham first spoke openly about her struggles with substance abuse last fall. On Dax Shepard’s Armchair Expert podcast, she talked about being six months sober and her struggles with the drug Klonopin. Dunham said she started taking the medication because of the intense anxiety she felt because of her exhaustive work schedule. While the drug did help her return to a sense of normalcy early on, she found herself taking more of the drug to the point of becoming dependent.
She went on to say that her intake of Klonopin increased with a diagnosis of PTSD. Additionally, she stated that she did not have problems finding doctors who would prescribe Klonopin. When she was ready to quit taking the medication, she said the following:
“Nobody I know who are prescribed these medications is told, ‘By the way, when you try and get off this, it’s going to be like the most hellacious acid trip you’ve ever had where you’re f—– clutching the walls and the hair is blowing off your head and you can’t believe you found yourself in this situation,’ ” she said. “Now the literal smell of the inside of pill bottles makes me want to throw up.”
