Nokia Oyj (NYSE:NOK) has announced the signing of an agreement with Carrix Inc.’s wholly o0owned subsidiary Tideworks Technology to deploy its Digital Automation Cloud (DAC) at Terminal 5 in the Port of Seattle.
Nokia DAV to improve efficiency and employee safety
The introduction of the digital automation service platform with an industrial-grade, enhanced performance LTE/5G private network will deliver increased efficiency and employee safety. Equally, it will improve terminal handling through the reduction of port flow complexity. The private wireless network which will capable of delivering improved indoors connectivity and out across terminal 5 operations including lifts, trucks, and cranes will also boost communications efficiency between logistics parties. Most importantly, Nokia’s DAC incorporates ruggedized smartphones and tablets for use across the terminal as well as yard inventory and mobile voice communications applications.
This agreement comes following a successful Nokia DAC proof-of-concept test at SSA Terminals at the Oakland International Container Terminal (OICT). The test found that a small number of Nokia DAC private LTE radios that can transmit over a mix of the dedicated and shared spectrum can offer superior coverage and reliability to around 200 WiFi access points across the two Oakland sites.
Nokia DAC already tested in SSAT’s OICT
Tideworks Technology’s VP Amanda Gress said that the Nokia DAC platform has shown that it can be reliable in a rigorous trial at SSAT’s Oakland International Container terminal. Gress said that this is a logical move in improving the reliability of the terminal’s operating system and increase operational applications requiring secure and reliable high-bandwidth performance. She said that they look forward to supporting and securing the same kind of safety, mobility, and productivity benefits at Terminal 5 at the Port of Seattle.
Nokia Cloud and Networking Services’ US Enterprise Sales VP, Matt young said that the use cases demonstrate the advantages of private wireless in intermodal or port terminal operations. He said that the Nokia DAC platform will enable fast, resilient, and cable-free operational connectivity.
