Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) Plans to Brings Its Cars to India in 2021 As It Expands Operations
India’s Transport Minister, Nitin Gadkari has said that from early next year Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) will be operating in India. The pronouncement comes a day after the electric car announced that it was planning to enter the second most populous market in the world in 2021.
Tesla to make its debut in India in Early 2021
Gadkari said that the company will commence operations with sales early next year before looking at assembling and maybe manufacturing vehicles in the country. Early reports had indicated that the electric car maker will commence bookings for Model 3 cars with the company expected to import completely built units into the country and sell them through dealerships.Tesla plans to focus mainly on online sales. The Model 3 car will be sold at Rs55 lakh although the average starting point of an electric car is Rs10 lakh.
In October Elon Musk, Tesla’s CEO claimed that the company will debut in India, and over the weekend he tweeted the same but the debut will not be as early as January. For years the company has shown interest in foraying into the Indian market but in 2018 Musk claimed that government regulations had proved to be a stumbling block. Musk has several fans in India and in 2016 a handful of people had booked the Model 3 by paying $1,000 but this didn’t materialize because of regulations that caused the delays.
Musk said government regulations have derailed tesla’s debut in India
In 2017 he claimed that he was told that around 30% of the parts must be sourced locally and supply was non-existent in India at the time. Tesla has been determined to expand its global sales and currently has showrooms in China, Australia, Japan, Mexico, andCanada as well as in Europe.
Currently, the Indian market is dominated by salt-to-steel giant Tata, Mahindra, Maruti Suzuki, and Hyundai. In the last two years Hyundai, Mercedes, Morris Garages, and Tata Motors have launched electric car models in India which include the Tata Nexon EV and Mercedes EQC.
