Verizon Communications (NYSE:VZ) Becomes The First To Deploy Samsung’s Recently Unveiled 5G mmWave Small Cell
Verizon Communications (NYSE:VZ) is planning to deploy the recently unveiled Samsung indoor 5G mmWave small cell at the end of this year. Last week, the company said they were conducting lab trials with Samsung testing the product and field tests for an indoor 5G cell site from Corning.
Samsung unveils indoor 5G mmWave small Cell
The 5G indoor small cell-Link Cell offers an enhanced and seamless 5G experience to indoor users. It can deliver the 5G-powered application in enterprises that include corporate offices, distribution, or manufacturing facilities as well as public or entertainment venues. The Link Cell is one of Samsung’s first commercial products offering wireless operators mmWave indoor small cells.
The Link Cell supports 28 GHz and combining four 100 MHz spectrum channels for gigabit speeds. Samsung said that the small Cell, which is 3.8 liters in volume, is the smallest in the industry, and it combines radio, antenna, and baseband elements. It is also lightweight at just 2.8 kg. The South Korean company indicated that the small cells need only one technician to set up with a single Ethernet cable providing backhaul for every unit.
Verizon hopes to deliver a fast 5G network with mmWave small Cell
Currently, Verizon is using a high-capacity 28 GHz mmWave for 5G with poor penetration and limited signal reach. As a result, indoor solutions are important in linking the carriers’ outdoor 5G services with in-building connectivity and thus support private enterprise 5G networks.
In a statement, Verizon’s SVP Technology Planning and Development Adam Koeppe stated that the company has continued to advance its 5G deployment. Koeppe said that the addition of in-building cell sites will enhance the fastest 5G service in the country, which is vital in offering industry-changing, latency-sensitive, scalable, and robust 5G enterprise solutions.
For some time now, Verizon and Samsung have been working on mmWave, and Samsung was among the early 5G suppliers alongside Nokia and Ericsson. Verizon was among the first carriers to deploy the 5G NR integrated millimeter Waves access unit.
